Meet the crew

Aaron Smith

  • Aaron is an architect-turned-builder, turned design-builder, with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture from the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado Denver, respectively. A chance opportunity to design and build a treehouse as a side project in 2014 sparked a passion for playful design and the challenges of executing unique builds that couldn't be ignored. Aaron founded Treecraft in 2015 with the mission to create extremely well-crafted, adventurous structures. Before going full time into treehouse building, he previously worked in architecture offices, timber framing crews, and in the tinyhouse design-build world.

Though he has thrived in an everything-man role at Treecraft from day one, as the company has grown he has settled into his primary roles which include fostering client relationships, directing design, and managing operations from the shop in Fort Collins. On a rare day you may find him back out on site with the green bags, contemplating trading emails for splinters full time!

Aaron is also an ultramarathon runner, and lives in Fort Collins with his wonderful wife Cassie and three enthusiastic treehouse testers: Jake (6), Charlie (4), and Tessa (0).

cameron breck

  • Cam is a licensed architect who feels equally at home in all aspects of the design-build process, but most of his time at Treecraft is spent designing awesome treehouses. He is originally from Vermont and received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Before joining Treecraft in 2019, he worked at several design-build and carpentry companies, as well as a fancy schmancy architecture firm in New York. In his role at Treecraft, Cam has helped the company grow while serving as an important bridge between the design and build processes.

JOHN HOWARD

  • John grew up in Illinois and studied art at Seattle Pacific University. Soon after taking his first sculpture class, he quickly discovered that he had a passion for crafting in three dimensions. After seven years of making art and furniture for retail store Anthropologie, John joined Treecraft in 2020 and is now a lead carpenter and project manager. John grew up spending a lot of time outside and continues to try to be outside as much as possible with his family. When he's not building, John can be found camping, running, mountain biking around Colorado or playing with his adorable children.

MITCH DALTON

  • Mitch is a seasoned timber framer turned treehouse builder. He began his career in 2012 at Falling Acorn Timber framing in Virginia, where he mastered the intricacies of traditional timber joinery. His commitment to historic preservation led him to Colorado in 2017, where he furthered his expertise in this field. In 2018, Mitch founded his own company, specializing in custom homes and large timber structures. With a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, Mitch joined Treecraft in 2021, bringing his wealth of experience to the team. Beyond his professional pursuits, Mitch enjoys rock climbing, paragliding, and skiing, immersing himself in the natural beauty of the outdoors.

CULLEN PRINCE

  • Cullen has been a carpenter with Treecraft since joining the team in June 2022. He typically fills any role that’s needed whether that’s building cabinets or framing walls. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, he got his start at a woodworking trade school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he focused on furniture building and specialty finishes. Cullen and his wife have lived in Fort Collins since 2021 where their favorite hobbies always involve the outdoors. They spend their free time snowboarding, listening to live music or hanging out on the Poudre river.

MIKE TAORMINA

  • Hailing from the shores of Plymouth Massachusetts, Mike grew up as the youngest of four brothers. His love of carpentry started at 10 years old while building a custom skateboard half pipe with his dad. After playing hockey across America and Canada for 23 years Mike decided it was time to hang up the skates since getting a “real” job was better than a life of getting punched in the head in the minor leagues. Mike founded and operated an oyster farm in Cape Cod Bay. Mike used this business as an opportunity to develop and refine different areas of his craftsmanship, building an aluminum boat and a custom oyster sorting machine. After moving to Colorado, Mike joined the Treecraft team where his skills are constantly put to the test as part of the build team. When he is not at the shop or onsite, he can be found backcountry snowboarding, riding his bike, or dreaming of a surf trip to Indonesia.

BEN WILSON

  • Originally from the corn fields of Oklahoma, Ben’s heart yearns to be in the mountains. He has a degree in Forestry and has spent the last eight years collecting a broad set of skills from his professional experiences which include work as a backcountry and mountain bike trail builder, a wildland firefighter, and a certified Arborist. After two years of building treehouses across Northwest Arkansas, Ben joined Treecraft in the summer of 2023. When he is not building, Ben can be found rock climbing, mountain unicycling, playing the handpan, or bikepacking around Colorado and Utah.
